Late last year for our final theory assessment, me and the girls were challenged with the task of creating a hypothetical campaign for the AGDA Design for Good awards. We decided to tackle a very serious and nuanced issue in our society: violence against women, specifically sexual harassment and physical abuse. We rebranded the existing (on hiatus) NFP organisation YWASV, and gave them a more contemporary and gender neutral look.
In our research, we found previous campaigns would target and blame men viciously with their negative and wordy posters - causing them to become defensive. They often included vague, tired messaging, and negative words like “STOP”, which called out men and shamed them. Many campaigns we saw didn’t have a clear, positive call to action, or they were simply repetitive and unoriginal.
We illustrated these characters based on war propaganda imagery, in a slight tongue-in-cheek way, as if to recruit them into this new way of thinking. Hopefully by celebrating these positive traits, we can encourage men to change their behaviour (if necessary) and set the bar high for future generations to come.
Thanks to our lovely lecturers Stephanie & Leah for their feedback & big shout out to Ryan for the prop poster idea and to the girls for slaying the execution of the posters!!
